What is MHHS?

MHHS is an industry-wide change led by Ofgem and being facilitated by Elexon. It’s being introduced in phases across the UK energy industry. This began in September 2025 and will eventually be the industry standard for all electricity supplies.

It means electricity use will be recorded every 30 minutes and used for billing and settlement as standard across the industry.

This replaces the current system where many businesses are billed using estimated or less frequent data.

Why is MHHS happening?

Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) is a key enabler of the flexibility needed to support the transition to Net Zero. MHHS will:

– Improve accuracy in billing
– Give better visibility of energy use
– Support smarter energy use
– Help balance the grid as more renewable energy is used
– Support the UK’s move to a low-carbon energy system

How MHHS affects your business

MHHS settlement data will be based on more detailed data from your meter/s. This will be the same across all business sizes, and will:

– Give you access to more accurate settlement information based on actual half-hourly readings for all MPANs in your portfolio
– Provide more tariff opportunities like time of use tariffs
– Give you access to smarter data insights

Please note that if you currently have traditional meters there may be some cost in upgrading to half-hourly meters.

We’ll let you know if there are any changes to your account planned as part of the MHHS migration.

As MHHS is introduced, you may see improvements in your online account and app, including:

– More detailed insight graphs
– Clearer breakdowns of when energy is used
– Improved data downloads

Keep an eye out for updates and new features as we release them.

Some features like detailed insights data may require you to opt-in, but as MHHS is an industry-wide change, most of the work will be done behind the scenes by Ofgem and energy suppliers.

We’ll let you know if there are any changes to your account based on the MHHS migration.

If you have any questions or concerns about MHHS and how this might affect your business, please contact hellobusiness@goodenergy.co.uk

If you have a smart or half-hourly meter

You may already be using half-hourly data. You’ll continue to:

-See detailed usage data
– Access insights through your online account

MHHS will standardise how this data is used across the industry.

If you have a traditional meter

Your usage is currently based on actual or estimated meter readings. To benefit from MHHS you will need a Smart meter.

With MHHS you’ll be able to access more detailed energy insights. This can help you better understand and manage your energy.

Please contact hellobusiness@goodenergy.co.uk if you are interested in a smart meter installation

How MHHS affects your bill

MHHS does not change your tariff, however your billing will be based on accurate data. In future, there may changes to billing and/or contracts to align to the half-hourly metering process. If there are any changes, we will be in touch.
